COVID-19 vaccine NIP transition
From 1 October 2026, COVID-19 vaccines will be supplied and funded under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), replacing the stand-alone National COVID-19 Vaccine Program (NCVP) established during Australia’s COVID-19 pandemic response.
The Australian Government has provided an update on the transition which is available via COVID-19 vaccines - Update for immunisation providers.
From 1 October 2026, COVID-19 vaccines will be funded under the NIP for:
- all adults aged 75 years and over (two funded doses per year)
- adults aged 65–74 years (one funded dose per year)
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50–74 years (one funded dose per year)
- all adults aged 18 years and over with severe immunocompromise (one funded dose per year).
People who are not eligible for a funded COVID-19 vaccine may choose to purchase the vaccine privately, based on a risk-benefit discussion with their healthcare provider.
COVID-19 vaccine ordering
Final orders through the Commonwealth Vaccination Administration System (CVAS) portal will close on 28 August 2026. Please order sufficient stock through CVAS to meet your anticipated COVID-19 vaccine requirements until 1 October 2026.
From mid-September 2026, COVID‑19 vaccines will be available for routine ordering from Queensland Health Immunisation Program (QHIP). Further information and guidance to support the transition will be provided in the coming weeks.
Providers are encouraged to promote COVID vaccination for anyone eligible and who wants to be vaccinated now, ahead of the transition to the NIP.
Current arrangements until 1 October 2026
Until 1 October 2026, COVID-19 vaccines remain available under the current NCVP arrangements. Providers should continue to offer COVID-19 vaccination in line with existing program arrangements and clinical recommendations.
Please read the NIP immunisation provider update for more detailed information.
