Help shape the next generation of nurses in the Moreton Bay, Caboolture, and North Brisbane region
The University of the Sunshine Coast's Bachelor of Nursing Science prepares future registered nurses to deliver safe, compassionate and evidence-based care across a range of health care settings.
Our students engage in immersive, hands-on learning from their first year and learn in small, supportive cohorts, combining clinical simulation, virtual reality environments and extensive placements across hospitals, aged care, community and primary health care settings. Throughout their studies, students develop clinical judgement, cultural safety capabilities, communication skills and a person-centred approach to care, graduating ready to contribute to Australia’s evolving health workforce.
General Practice plays a vital role in helping nursing students gain real-world experience and develop an understanding of primary health care. Hosting a student can provide valuable professional development opportunities for practice nurses, bring fresh perspectives and current knowledge into the workplace and help build the future general practice workforce.
Placements typically involve students working alongside a registered nurse and engaging with the broader practice team. First-year students require direct supervision, ideally allocated to one registered nurse (RN), while senior students may work with greater independence under appropriate oversight. Practices generally host between one and four students, depending on staff capacity, with support available from UniSC clinical facilitators where required.
Through your guidance, our students will:
- build professional practice foundations through safe, ethical and culturally responsive care, effective communication and collaboration
- develop clinical assessment and care skills, from foundational skills such as vital signs monitoring and simple wound care to complex wound management, ECGs, medication administration and clinical handover
- apply nursing knowledge in complex health care settings, including assessing patient conditions, recognising deterioration and escalating care appropriately
- strengthen clinical decision-making and readiness for practice using critical thinking and reflection to safely manage increasingly complex care and transition into the workforce
