Shortage of Benzathine Benzylpenicillin (Bicillin L-A and Extencilline)
Ongoing shortages of both Bicillin L-A and Extencilline are affecting Queensland Health and community pharmacies.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) are aware of the shortages and are urgently exploring other sources of supply.
The expected resolution date for the Bicillin shortage has been updated on the Medicine Shortages Database to 31 October 2025
The TGA website has been updated to include:
- A table of all overseas-registered benzathine benzylpenicillin products approved under section 19A, approval holder contact details and product availability
- Information about the Special Access Scheme (SAS) and Authorised Prescriber (AP) pathways to assist with access to unapproved benzathine benzylpenicillin products
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) is updating their fact sheet to include the recent s19A approvals
Pfizer Australia has communicated that the next shipment of medication is anticipated to be available by mid-September 2025.
